How do our current notions of the workings of the universe fit with our deepest convictions about its meaning and value? From religion, we grasp the world as a created, given gift. Scientific theory. A third reason why ID is not science centers on the character of scientific theory. Appeal to a supernatural reality as the explanation of evolution or complexity cannot be tested. It fails, then, to meet a primary criterion for scientific method. Scientific knowledge results from explaining natural phenomena by their natural causes.
